For our main piece of coursework we are going to be producing a music magazine. Our magazine will consist of two front covers and a double page spread.
Ive decided to choose rock music as the main focus for my magazine and a target audience of alternative style teenagers with a passion for rock music. i chose a similar idea for my last task when we did a magazine for the college. Im going to be using pictures ive taken at gigs for the front cover and inside the magazine.i want the magazine to have a kind of dark feeling to it but with bursts of bright colours and bold fonts.

Analysing magazine - Kerrang!
The first magazine I'm going to be analysing is Kerrang!. The masthead Kerrang! is in black and has a white background. The style of font is interesting as it has gaps and cracks though it, this almost gives a kind of dark feeling to the magazine. The tag line on every issue is LIFE IS LOUD, it relates to the genre of the magazine and it is the same font and colour every week. However it is pink this week to match the other colours on this weeks cover.
I would say Kerrang! has a target audience of teenagers and rock music listeners. The front cover has mainly male rock stars on it, this maybe indicating a more female audience. it is a weekly magazine and is similar to the one I'm going to be producing. Every issue of Kerrang! has band names along the top and bottom that
are included in the magazine that week. also included are small pictures at the side that are the free posters included inside the magazine. The 'cover star' this week is Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day. As the main article this week is for rock icons he is a good person to choose for the cover. Also he would be included in the magazine with probably the most written about him. other rock stars included are in small boxes around him, only their heads are shown
The layout this week has overlaping pictures and does not have much blank space left, this is good as it makes the magazine look filled up and full of stuff to read. The writing is spaced out nicely so its easy to read. There is a side heading in a paint splodge saying 'live chaos' red is used to make it stand out next to the pink and yellow.

Ananylysing
magazine - Rock Sound
The second maga
zine I'm going to be analysing is rock sound magazine. similar to Kerrang! rock sound is also focused on rock and alternative music, but it has a much wider rage of the genre.
This magazine changes its masthead colour every issue to go with the other colours being used. This week it is green to match the yellow being used with the name of the band featured in this issue..
the main image is of Muse, a rock/alternative band that readers of rocksound would be interested in reading about. The image has the lead singer in the middle and further forward, the other band members are standing behind him. They are pulling serious faces and have their arms crossed, this might be the image they want to portray. it makes them seem powerful.
The tagline used is NEW MUSIC FIRST and is underlined. the writing in this magazine is fairly formal, as it seems to have been written by intellectual writers.
The fact that their are free posters included this week is advertised on the left hand side. Again the colour yellow is used. FREE! is stressedby using capitals and an exclamation mark, shortened versions of band names are underneath so the readers know what bands will be on the posters. A free cd is also advertised along the top of the magazine, there is a free cd every week with Rocksound. To the right of this are some names of the bands on the cd, this is put on the cover to draw people in to buy the magazine if they like the free music offered.

This is a double page spread from Kerrang! magazine. It is a review from a Metallica concert. It includs pictures from the concert of the band and their support acts.

This is the contents page of Kerrang! magazine. it includes page numbers and smaller pictures of the ones inside. there is more pictures than writing, which draws you in more.
the colour scheme is black and yellow, this runs throught the whole magazine.
Every week theres a quote from a famous music artist, this weeks quote is by Metallica member Kirk Hammett.
